Wow. This piece really blew my mind, I'm a bit overwhelmed. Articles like this are often long winded with only tenuous suspicions that things weren't quite right, but pretty much every paragraph here contains evidence that blows the trial wide open. Whilst it by no means proves that Megrahi was innocent, it proves by a long way that this was one of the most farcical and corrupt trials ever, and no conclusions it made can be taken seriously.

Alex Hilton has finally got a hoax right. A couple of years ago he tried to convince the world that Margaret Thatcher had died. Yesterday he launched a website pretending to be the Mayor of Baltimore, who was "outraged", I say "outraged" by Chris Grayling's comments likening some British city centres to the Baltimore based series The Wire. Despite there being plenty of clues on the website (copyright R Monkee, British spelling etc) some pretty big media institutions fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Check THIS out from The Guardian. Even the Baltimore Sun fell for it. And so, unbelievably did the BBC.

Pretty hilarious stuff, I'm pretty shocked that the BBC and the Guardian would just copy and paste this and assume it's real, they obviously didn't call the real Mayor of Baltimore to check. The funniest part though is the comments that Alex Hilton left embedded in the HTML Source of the site:

This story is a perfect illustration of the idiocy of the current classification system. When I saw that headline I was slightly shocked and thought "thats bad, more young people are shooting heroin and crack". But then when I click through to the story I realised it said "more than half a million people taking Cocaine and Ecstacy" and I felt relief. Ah, just cocaine and ecstacy, I thought they meant bad drugs! It doesn't really make sense that it can be a "crime" yet still such a large proportion of society partakes in said activity. Laws are meant to reflect societies attitudes, and it is abundantly clear from the last million years of evidence that young people like having a good time and taking drugs and worrying about consequences later.

No victim no crime! The only victims in any drug transaction are those artifically criminalised by the state.

The Home Office researchers say that marital status is the strongest factor associated with predicting illicit drug use, that is, if a man gets married he is more likely to give up drugs.

This merely shows that women are no fun.

Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi has signed up to make a live-action film version of the fantasy-based computer game World of Warcraft, Variety reports.

I'm so excited to see the kind of reaction this film will get. There will be an obvious split in the Warcraft community, with half claiming its the best thing ever and half claiming that its just Blizzard selling out (more). The interesting part will be whether anyone else watches it. I really wonder whether people who don't play the game are going to go see it, and it presents a familiar dillema for the people making the film. They could make it so that it's completely accurate and really appeals to fans of the game, you know, in jokes etc (although I can tell you know there is zero chance that this film will come out without "Leeroy Jenkins" being mentioned). But that would allienate....every one in the world who doesn't play world of warcraft, which is approximately 6bn - 10m.

Anyway, fascinating concept, I'm still waiting for someone to make a proper worthwhile movie adaption of a game. Although what I'm really waiting for is someone to bring out a new story line with a game and film released at the same time....

I was actually ready to defend the police in this taser case, as the victim was clearly an idiot for covering himself in petrol and holding a lighter. The circumstances sound like he would have been on fire eventually with or without the polices help, but either way this statement pissed me off. It's the only defense the police ever issue.

Charities Gambling With Donations

This is the most important part of the story. Why on earth are charities gambling with their money? There's no denying that that's what they were doing, there are plenty of safe building societies in Britain who will look after your money for you, but whats the point in a bank if it only gives you back what you put in, right? Much better to invest with Icelandic banks which promise to create money from nowhere for you, until the lies unravel and you realise there's no money left.

Really makes me wonder about the value of our charities, I feel like I actually have to check now whether the money I give to Amnesty International is used to help people, or is gambled away in casino's, sorry I mean "banks".

This does not mean there is a lack of teen intellect, it instead means that the majority of teenagers are utilising the new forms of media. Teens will often read free papers such as the Metro, which also include celebrity gossip and shocking stories and are more interesting than stories about the economy or swine flu.

I'm very interested in new media and it's good to see this article on the BBC which acknowledges a lot of the new phenomena, even mentioning the legendary Philip "You've just been filled in" DeFranco who is probably the only youtube-diarist that I don't want to murder. Anywho, this part made me stop and think; the first sentence seems to suggest that teens are looking for new forms of media, and stating that there is no "lack of intellect" suggests to me that teenagers know what they want to read and know where to find it. The second sentence, however, admits that teens "often read free newspapers such as the metro which contain" the usual shit about celebrities and are the main reason for the downfall of our society etc. So teenagers are using their "intellect" to be lazy and consume whatever media is shoved in their face while they're on the train and have nothing better to do?

I used to hate myself every time I got on the train without the Guardian and was forced to read the shite that they spew from the pages of the Metro - staring out the window is a far better use of anyones intellect - and I hate these teenage Metro readers with equal vengeance. It's also important to remember that the Metro is published by the same bastards that torture our country with the Daily Mail every day, so next time you're on the train and facing the choice between hours of brain-quashing boredom or reading the Metro, please, please, think of the children.

Well yes it does. But this implies that preventing disruption is your main concern, and so the obvious solution is to put any potential protestor under house arrest for the duration of the event.

Hey kids, look at me. No link to the BBC with a poorly constructed comment tacked on at the end, this time I'm ranting about Youtube.

Has anyone else noticed how 99% of the videos on there are just "vbloggers" (or "videobloggers" or "twats", whichever term u prefer), who have gone to all the effort of making a video just to say "I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while, so here's an update video! I'm sooo busy with my cool and eventful life that I might not be able to post in a while, so I'm reeeeally sorry to all my fans who are sat on my profile hitting refresh over and over. More soon, bye"

The really stunning thing is that there is never actually a video with "content", it's always just "oh sorry I haven't made a video for a while". Yes that's great, but what the fuck do you actually make videos about?

It's an interesting phenomenon that certain services tend to taken over with talk and content about that service. For example when blogging was quite new, most of the blogs were about blogging, in the early days of twitter lots of the posts were just about Twitter and different apps you can use etc. So it seems to be the same with Youtube, too many videos about Youtube, not enough about anything else.

I don't mean to have a go at Youtube, it's only because I love it so much that these little irritations start to piss me off. The only thing missing is a negative search. You know how you can search for all videos with "dog" in the title, why can't I search for all videos which DONT HAVE "Britains got talent" "michael jackson" "Britney spears" etc etc. Then I could have a perfectly clean list of videos which are much less likely to piss me off!

Hi - our service is unlimited and we don't cap, but we do manage traffic at busy times to ensure the best possible service.

So I got into a bit of a debate with Virgin Media on twitter today and just thought I'd post their outright lies for everyone to say. This statement doesn't even make sense, it's "unlimited", but we do "manage traffic" to ensure the "best possible service". Giving someone a slower speed can in no way be presented as "best possible service". I pay for 10mb/s and sometimes it's that, but a large bulk of the time it's at 2.5mb/s because I have dared to use the service I pay for. If they occasionally boosted me higher or something, or even just kept it at the level that I fucking pay for, that would be the "best possible service". If the service is unlimited, then what is the term I should apply to the act of having my bandwidth cut if I upload 800megs between 3pm and 8pm, or download 1500megs between 4pm and 9pm? Some sane people would call those concepts "limits", but apparently not Virgin Media.

I'm not a fool, and I understand that when they say they're trying to offer the best possible service is because if too many people download at once it gets clogged up. I also understand that over the last year Virgin Media have been "upgrading" people from 4megs to 10, or 2 to 4, while not adding any extra capacity to their network to cope with the strain, which causes these problems and hence requires limiting to be in place.

The Pirate Bay is well-known for hosting lists of websites where people can get pirated copies of movies, music, software and TV shows.

Well....no. The Pirate Bay don't like to any websites which host pirated material. They host torrent files which allow users to send files between themselves. Google in fact lists websites where you can downloaded copyrighted material, and this BBC article doesn't have a problem with linking to the Pirate Bay website. How many links do there have to be before it stops being illegal? Like if you link to something that links to something that links to something that has copyrighted material, is that illegal? That's what the pirate bay does, that's what Google does, and now what the BBC does.

Oh, do fuck off

Although drinking is not banned in the zones, police can ask anyone to stop drinking and it is an offence to refuse, punishable by a maximum £500 fine. No explanation or suspicion that the person could be a public nuisance is required. The highest fine will soon rise to £2,500.

I believe this is exactly what a law is not supposed to do? Laws should be black and white; if they did this that happens, if they didn't nothing happens. This particular drinking regulation is completely incomprehensible to any kind of normal human mind: It's not illegal to drink, it's not "banned", but depending if the police officer feels like it not, they can tell you to stop and confiscate your drink. Obviously you are not allowed to argue with this or you'll be arrested. They do not have to give you a reason, you could be sat in the park by another guy and they make you stop drinking but let the guy next to you carry on, and that is perfectly within the letter of this law!

And here I was thinking the law was supposed to be consistent, but it turns out that it's really down to individual discretion of whichever cunt happens to be near you in uniform that day. Marvellous.

Oh my fucking god, the ministry of Justice has literally no idea how technology works does it. Prisoners are not allowed mobile phones. The problem is that they are smuggling them in up their arse or something apparently, and that is an issue that needs to be looked at and fixed. It has FUCK ALL TO DO WITH FACEBOOK! Can you imagine this conversation:

MoJ: "Can you help us out with stopping prisoners getting on facebook?"
Facebook: "Have you tried stopping them shoving phones up their arses"
MoJ: "No not yet, we'll look into that thanks"

What do they expect facebook to do, modify their entire website so it picks up the GPS position of a user accessing it and works out if they're in a prison and then blocks access? Yeah that makes sense! Even though PRISONERS AREN'T ALLOWED MOBILE PHONES OR ANY FORM OF COMMUNICATION!

Confronting Youths

An MP was beaten by a group of youths after he tried to stop them playing football in the street.

Um, is it really ever sensible to confront a "gang of youths"? Normally I would say he could have just phoned the police and not got involved, but this was for playing football in the street!? Hardly the crime of the century. I think this guy has more responsibility for staying alive and looking after his family than stopping kids kicking a ball in a street. Was he seriously going to go the police station and say "Look! I saw some kids playing football in the street! I've even got photographic evidence, STOP EVERYTHING!" I imagine the police would have laughed in his face.

So yeah, I don't like to have a go at him because it was a kind of brave thing to do, but as is so often the case with "bravery" it also turned out to be pretty fuckin stupid.

This guy isn't an idiot, I'm sure he's aware of the risks, but the point is he has made a decision to live with that. Surely they could let him sign some form or something that says "If there is a fire and I die because I can't get out, it is all my fault and the council are not responsible, signed Hilaire Purbrick". Wouldn't that solve everything?

They claim the vehicles are too lightly armoured to cope with the weapons used against them and that the MoD was negligent in allowing their use.

I think if you join the army you should expect to die, and when you do die I think your family should shut the fuck up. Yes the death could have been avoided by using better armor or equipment, but it could also have been avoided by staying at home and not dedicating your life to shooting brown people.

There's nothing worse than people who join the army then act surprised when they get killed.

A council has lost its High Court case against a former managing director after claiming she withheld a history of depressive illness.

It's good to see people with mental illness still getting shafted in this country. They get the worst of both worlds, less recognition and sympathy in day to day life, but then when something like this happens they're pilloried for not "confessing" to a having been depressed in the past. Imagine being too depressed to go to work anyway, and then your employer tries to sue you for a million pounds. I heard someone on radio 4 phoning in to comment on this story (probably the first time I haven't had to switch off the radio while listeners are phoning in), and he said something like: What if it was a middle aged person who'd had an injury as a kid playing rugby or something and have slightly dodgy knees, and then at 50 break their leg and have to have time off work, would the worker sue them for not "revealing" they're full medical background? I don't think so.

Either way, Cheltenham Borough Council are saying that anyone who's ever been depressed in the past should be legally obliged to tell this to every employer they go for an interview with? Isn't that like, you know, against equal opportunites employment ETC ETC!?!?!? THOSE PESKY EQUAL OPPPORTUNITES LAWS EH!?? I'm sure Cheltenham Borough Council are the kind of people who would call that "Too PC", having to employ people that were once depressed.

I'm glad the court reached this decision, but I wonder if the damage has already been done to this woman and her career.

Other companies, such as AVG and Alwil already produce and distribute free anti-virus products.

What on earth was the point in that? "Mr President of Symantec, do you think Microsofts plan for a free anti virus product is a good idea or do you think people should buy your product?" "Well I think what people really want is to buy my stuff".

Fascinating. Symantec are evil, they make Norton Antivirus which is the most offensive software ever produced, it would actually be better to let your PC get overrun with viruses than install Norton which crawls your system to a halt and is literally impossible to remove. It's more like a virus than the things it claims to remove.

Tracking Communication

The trouble with this issue is that statement on it's own sounds kind of sensible. You can argue that by not tracking communication, the government is "allowing" murders, assults, robberies etc to happen. But these "Security Experts" have never explained exactly where the line would be. If you argue that by not monitoring communication, the government is "allowing" murders, then that argument will always be true until the government makes everyone where a headset camera and microphone and watches what everyone is doing and every time. It is technically possible to prevent all murders under a system like this, with everyone having someone else watching them 24/7 and alerting the police when they're about to do a murder. But it's also FUCKING RIDICULOUS! Unfortunately the media will prevent all possibility of a debate about this, because they'll say it's a cost benefit analysis and you can't put a price on someones life or something. But personally I'm not sure it's worth the end to our privacy and civil liberties, for measures which I imagine will reduce crime by about 2% or something.

The other point that is s seldom raised in this debate, is that terrorists are likely to not be stupid and use public phone lines or whatever, they use disposable mobile phones and throw them after 1 call. If they were clever they'd use laptops and skype or IRC and Tor encryption which is pretty much unbreakable. So, if the terrorists are at least as clever as me, then all these government proposals are pointless.

An Open Letter To The New Statesman

I was getting pretty pissed off with the New Statesman carrying more and more advertising from BAE systems so I decided to write them a letter about it. Surprisingly they didn't print it, so it is published here for your enjoyment:

I am curious about the fluid relationship The New Statesman seems to have with BAE Systems. Recently you have been carrying more and more advertising from them and last week's issue even contained one of those trick "In Association With" articles that is trying not to look like an advertisment. BAE Systems are well known for a culture of bribery and ruthlessness in their business dealings, which include selling arms to Saudi Arabia who then made threats that "British lives on British streets" would be in danger if the SFO continued its fraud investigation. I find it hard to believe that you overlooked this fact, since it has been exposed by Mark Thomas and others on the pages of this very magazine over recent years, and so can only assume that The New Statesman has had a change of heart and finds that it's values are now compatible with BAE Systems. The company was even caught spying on one of your writers (Gideon Burrows 06/10/2003). If you could please correct my confusion I'd be grateful.

Is it really naive of me to expect that magazines, especially political ones, would not take money from companies who's fundamental goals are entirely at odds with their own? Or maybe now the New Statesman is all in favour of state terrorism, bribery, nuclear missiles, cluster bombs, various atrocities under Geneva Conventions etc etc...

Well this has all gone messed up hasn't it. All week we've been having a jolly good laugh at the expense of Nadine Dorries, watching her dig deeper and deeper, as her lies got more twisted and confused. Last night before I went to bed I noticed it was offline (yeah I check her blog last thing everyday before I go to sleep), and assumed she'd had enough of it all and decided to keep quiet for a bit. But this morning it turns out she's been shutdown by the lawyers of the Barclays Brothers due to some silly conspiracy theories she has about them deliberately timing the release of MPs Expenses to disrupt the European elections and get a better turnout for BNP and UKIP. This is sounds quite clearly crazy, but when the accused is worried enough to get their lawyers in and have the offending website shutdown, then something starts to smell a bit fishy? Anywho, here is her post reprinted in full, mainly because I enjoy publishing Libel and annoying lawyers.

Winners or Losers?

Just park a couple of facts for a moment, which you may not agree with but are factual.
The first is that MPs have always been encouraged, by whatever means possible, to draw down their ACA allowance in full. This is because it was upped in place of an appropriate pay rise.

The rules surrounding the ACA were deliberately sloppy in order to maximise the opportunity that MPs had to draw.
This was always felt to be the safest political method to remunerate MPs, rather than face the media backlash of a pay rise.

Parliament is in chaos. The public are angry. The Telegraph has upped its circulation.
There are 650 members of Parliament. In any walk of life, in whatever profession, you will find people who are dishonest. It will always be thus as long as we are all human!

The Telegraph are uncovering a few cases of fraud, but not enough, so they are more than slightly embellishing some of the stories. I write as a case in point.

Enter the Barclay brothers, the billionaire owners of The Daily Telegraph.
Rumour is that they are fiercely Euro sceptic and do not feel that either of the main parties are Euro sceptic enough. They have set upon a deliberate course to destabilise Parliament, with the hope that the winners will be UKIP and BNP.

A quick online check of the Barclay brothers and their antics on the Island of Sark is enough to give this part of the rumour credence.

These rumours do have some credibility given that this has all erupted during the European Election Campaign and turn out is expected to be high with protest votes, courtesy of the Daily Telegraph, or should I say the Barclay brothers.

Now, if this is all a power game executed by the BBs, how would they do that?

I would imagine and believe that if any of this is true, they know the British psyche well enough to whip up a mood of public anger, hence the long running revelations in the DT.

Where do I get this from? Well, at heart I am just a cheeky scouser. I like to go into the rooms of the faceless and nameless in Parliament, sit on their desk and ask pertinent questions like: who are you? What do you do? I've made friends with one or two. One in particular I am very fond of. He is a mine of very astute information; and whilst in his office yesterday, we chunnered over the 'what is this all about?' question.

He reckons this is all a power game. That the British public are being worked like puppets by two very powerful men. Whipped up into a frenzy to achieve exactly what they want.

This seems quite a telling example of councils being out of touch with technology. A teacher is in trouble for using Twitter, and the Councils immediate reaction is "But we banned Twitter in school. HOW CAN SHE POSSIBLY USE IT!?!?". They are clearly unaware that mobile phones can connect to the internet these days....let alone the fact that Twitter was setup with SMS integration as one of it's core features. Anyway there will obviously be no real facts about the story and just a load of controversy, but the only way this is a problem is if she's doing it during school hours when she should be teaching, or if she reveals information about pupils which could be used to identify them. It would be perfectly possible to do this anonymously but obviously the teacher hasn't taken enough steps to ensure that that's the case.

Anyway the most disturbing revelation for me in this story was:

Argyll and Bute Council policy states that teachers may access professional blogs which have educational value but are not allowed to have their own blog.

WHAT THE FUCK!? My parents are both teachers and I will be immediately setting them up blogs when they get back from work, just to piss on this notion that teachers shouldn't have them.

She says she only goes "somewhere else" – either her holiday home in South Africa or the place she claims is her main residence – during free weekends and the parliamentary recess.

I know there has been a lot of internet hatred for Nadine Dorries for some time now but I've only really started to feel it in the past few weeks. She was on Radio 4 this morning having to defend a ridiculous claim on her blog that there was going to be a "suicide" in parliament or something, and whinging about how MPs don't get paid enough. A holiday home in South Africa sounds like e-fucking-nough to me.

Even more ridulously, she is taking to the extreme the notion that it is all the "systems" fault. From a post on her blog (I can't link to the exact post because her blog doesn't work properly):

If MPs are guilty, so are those who knew the system was in place, including the Telegraph journalists who have now decided for their own political reasons to expose the system, in a way which profits the Telegraph, for their own reasons.

So, according to Nadine Dorries, the Daily Telegraph is just as accountable for making sure the country and it's parliament is run fairly as MPs are. Just because MPs are the sole people who write the expenses legislation, and the Daily Telegraph aren't actually elected people with an power, doesn't mean there's a difference! IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME!!!

If this is Swiftcovers defense then they have clearly missed the point; it's not particularly about musicians, it's the fact that Iggy Pop stands in front of a camera and says "I've got it Swiftcovered, I've got insurance on my insurance...so do it, get swiftcovered". I notice how he doesn't explicitly say "I have an insurance policy with swiftcover" but "I've got it swiftcovered" which, cleverly, is enough to imply that he uses it, but perhaps they thought it would get them out of any legal issues? All 12 men arrested over a suspected bomb plot in the UK have now been released without charge by police.

Eleven - all Pakistani nationals - have been transferred to UK Borders Agency custody and face possible deportation.

I'm sorry, why are these people being deported? For what reason exactly? There's no suggestion that they've broken any laws or came here on false documentation. Is it enough that you're accused of terrorism to get deported? These people were held for thirteen days with no charge, after hugely dramatic "terror raids" which are clearly executed in order to grab headlines. The total evidence found was:

What the fuck? Is anyone seriously suggesting with a straigh face that the state of Israel gives equal treatment to all races? The state was specifically designed and setup as a state for ONE RACE of people, and it inherently, institutionaly, does not treat people of other races as well as it treats people of the Jewish race. This is textbook racism. It is the ultimate irony that at a conference about racism, the one correct statement about racism was met with the rest of the delegates walking out, how fucking useful.

Also, has no one realised that this is exactly the reaction Iran hoped for? They are trying to play the victim, and it is a clever move because if in the future Iran do choose to use military force for whatever reason, they can say "look, we tried to come to debates, to operate through proper channels, and we were ignored" and they would be telling the truth. If the West fears Iran so much, as it seems to, would it not be useful to take opportunities like this to talk with it's leaders and find out why they hate us? To open some kind of dialogue?

And in a further sign of hilarious pettiness, Israel have withdrawn their ambassador to Switzerland 'in protest of Switzerland's approach towards a Holocaust denier". I'm sorry but if you are only ever going to meet with people who hold the exact same factual views as you on every single event in human history, then you might as well just kill yourself now? It cannot be illegal to deny an event happened. Look: WORLD WAR TWO IS A LIE! IT NEVER HAPPENED! Should I be in prison? Maybe this question should be used as some kind of retard test, and anyone who fails has to shut the fuck up. That means you Israel.

Here's my comment on this. Why do you send a murderer to jail? Because murdering is bad and this stops the murderer being able to do it. If The Pirate Bay is so bad why not shut it down? The Pirate Bay will continue to be active and even more so due to all the media coverage of this event, so all you do is inconvenience four men by putting them in prison for a year. The court has proved absolutely nothing.

My mate showed me this video as it was inevitably the most watched on YouTube, and it made me feel fucking sick. The way the judges all looked completely shocked and then gave a little speech about how they never expected this. Of course they didn't expect it, because they and the whole show is based on prejudice, discrimination, and watching pretty people sing and dance. It's ironic that the huge roars from the crowd would never have happened if Susan Boyle was a "normal" pretty pop star, because the crowds expect - and would probably gamble their life on it - that beautiful people are talented and ugly people aren't. Well
fuck you. It is great that this event made people realise their prejudices, but it won't make them change.

"CIA no longer operates detention facilities or black sites," Mr Panetta said in a letter to staff.

So the CIA tell us they're going to shut down their secret prisons...which they initially lied about...but this time they're telling the truth? By definition, it wouldn't be a "secret prison" if they told us about it, so if anything this only suggests that they intend to keep secret prisons? They just won't have any secret prisons that they tell us about.

Channel 4 - News - IPCC: CCTV wasn't working

Hardwick said of the assault:

I'd urge you to avoid reading the Youtube comments for this video, they all seem to think it was Tomlinsons fault for walking near a policeman and he deserved everything he got..... The state of society today eh.
