The Power Of Nightmares

I've just discovered an absolutely fascinating documentary by Adam Curtis called "The Power Of Nightmares" (wiki, imdb). The basic premise is that politicians used to "promise dreams", but now that the west has become relatively comfortable economically, they have to invent demons to "protect" us from, since they can promise nothing more. Well anyway, they put that a lot better in the film! It's made up of three hour-long parts, and I've only seen the first one and a half but plan to watch the rest in a minute.

Some of the most shocking parts were how American "Neo-Cons" gathered in the 1970s in order to exagerrate the Soviet threat and basically extend the cold war for another few decades. This is probably the part that pissed me off most though, 32 years ago the people who started this were: Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz. Three people who still run the US administration and cause oppression and death around the entire globe, 32 years later. I can't believe they haven't been stopped yet.

This documentary was first shown on the BBC in 2005, can't believe I missed it then but at least technology provides us with a way to catch up. You can watch it on google video, or download it through bittorrent (this one has much better video quality).
