Selective Reading

BBC NEWS | UK | 'Purity' ring case in High Court

She told BBC Breakfast: "In the Bible it says you should remain sexually pure and I think this is a way I want to express my faith."
Yes isn't that a nice little lesson. What about this bit (Genesis 19):

22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.

27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.

28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

In case you haven't guessed "know" means rape. The men of the town wanted to sodomize this guy, but the other guy was all like "no no, that is disgraceful! Here, take my daughter and rape her all night long". The next morning she was dead and he cut her up into twelve pieces to be spread to all the corners of Israel or something.

What a lovely story!

Mad props to Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" for finding this little tit-bit. It's like every sentence of that book is more proof of the utter lunacy of religion.

Apparently the girls lawyer claimed "that the school authorities were violating Lydia's right to

"freedom of thought, conscience and religion" under article 9 of the

European Convention on Human Rights." And Miss Playfoot says "I think in the society we live in today with lots of pregnancies and

STDs, something like this is quite important and should be taken hold

of." They seem to be getting a little confused. Not wearing that ring doesn't mean you have to have sex before marriage, you see? The school haven't criticized her beliefs, they've simply said she shouldn't wear that ring due to school policy. I happen to think school uniform rules are also bullshit, but that's not really the point right now. The point is if you have to wear a ring to reinforce your beliefs and values there is something very very wrong with you. Maybe someone should suggest to her the possibililty of taking the ring off and then not having sex. Might be hard for her to understand but probably worth a try.

It also turns out:

Miss Playfoot's parents Phil and Heather are part of the volunteer team which run the UK branch of the Silver Ring Thing, based in Horsham, West Sussex.

Mr Playfoot is the parents programme director while his wife is the company secretary, according to the scheme's website.

Oh, what a coincedence. Do you think this controversy is entirely down to the beliefs of the young 16 year old girl, or is it due to ignorant moral conditioning from her parents, who are trying to turn this into one of those "Christians are always persecuted" stories. Who knows.

And this is all regardless of the fact that abstinence is a stupid idea anyway. Studies have shown that teenagers who have taken "virginity pledges" are "less likely to use condoms and more likely to experiment with oral and anal sex" (Washington Post). These acts can also spread STDs which kind of pisses on her argument.

This Family Guy episode sums it all up pretty well; the school begins to teach abstinence which results in Meg and her boyfriend engaging in "Ear sex". Take from that what you will.
