Racism in Southern USA.

BBC NEWS | Programmes | This World | 'Stealth racism' stalks deep South

This is quite a dark story. So last summer in Jena some people put up nooses on a tree, the day after a black kid asked if he was allowed to sit there. This obviously sparked a lot of tension, and on the 4th of December a white student was attacked by a group of black students. He suffered concussion and went to hospital, but was well enough to leave the same day and go to a school function that evening. The District Attorney has decided that, rather than a minor assault, this constituted "attempted second degree murder". Interestingly the kid that was attacked has also since been charged with possessing a gun in school, but I wonder what punishment he will receive, if any.
