In the light of disturbing YouTube footage of teenagers experimenting with legally obtained but unregulated and untested 'herbal highs', science correspondent Alok Jha examines Britain's drug classification system

I must say I feel a bit let down by the Guardian with this video, it's a massive exaggeration of the "dangers" of Salvia. The guy in the video talks about how popular it is (lots of people do it) and says it's "untested" and we don't know the affects, but how many people have died or become ill because of taking Salvia? Any reported cases? HMM?? No, didn't think so. So what the fuck are you talking about. I've taken it a few times, the best analogy I can think of is it's like to marijuana what shandy is to beer, but that's not a very good description. It has a more intense effect but for a shorter time, more like 5-10 minutes.

Anyway, I thought it was hilarious, and I thought the Guardian usually had more common sense when it came to drugs. I was particularly annoyed when he said the companies where "effectively experimenting on teenagers" and "presenting it as some sort of herbal product". Er, not only are the presenting it as herbal, it is a herbal product, because it's a FUCKING PLANT. I thought the Guardian Science correspondent would understand what the word herbal means.
